And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee....

John 4:1-3

John 4:1

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard

Matthew said Jesus "withdrew," and Luke said He "returned in the power of the Spirit." John shows us Jesus was moving intentionally, acting when the conditions were right.

John 4:2

(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),

Jesus himself did not baptize

It is a fundamental Biblical theme that God works through messengers. The message has power, not the messenger.

Numbers 16:11

"Therefore it is against the LORD that you and all your company have gathered together. What is Aaron that you grumble against him?"

2 Kings 5:10

And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean."

1 Corinthians 1:12-15

What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name.

John 4:3

he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.
